X’mas & Christmas

Since it’s the holiday season and many of you will be writing Christmas greetings, we want you to be clear about how and when to use the abbreviation “X’mas”. Firstly you should know that some people may tell you it is offensive to use “X” to represent “Christ”, because they believe it demeans the spirit of the holiday. However, it is commonly used in greeting cards, advertising, and informal writing – so let's look at the phrase in context.

There is no right or wrong way to punctuate “X'mas,” but there are times when you should avoid using it.

In your essays, papers, and any formal document, the main rule is “do not abbreviate, always use the fully spelled word or phrase.” Writing a letter in a professional or academic context, for example, would demand you use “Christmas” (or, perhaps, the more neutral “Happy Holidays”). In a blog post, social media update, quick note, or personal letter “X'mas” is fine. You might also see “X'mas” used in an advertisement or a newspaper headline - formats that allow for the use of less formal language.

With that, Topadmit would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year !
