Recommendation letters give the admissions officer the perspective of a third person who knows you well. A good recommendation letter will highlight your strengths, but also mention weaknesses. It will go into detail and provide examples of projects you participated in, attributes you showed, work you did, or challenges you overcame. The person who writes your reference letter is oftentimes your teacher and will try to rank you among other applicants and use terms to quantify your strengths.
